North High News

Homecoming is here!  The big day is Friday Sept. 21. This is the day for alums to return to their alma mater and show their support and thanks to their school.  In our case, there is a triple celebration:  homecoming, a new class of inductees to the Hall of Fame (see below), and the 75th birthday of the North High building.  All alums are welcome TO ALL of the scheduled events.  If you are planning to attend the (free) light supper before the game, please let Steve Chambers know so we can plan on how much food to order.  This is open to all members of the Viking Association and Hall of Famers.  The schedule for homecoming follows:

10:45 am - 12:05 pm To celebrate the building's 75th birthday, birthday cake served in the main hall for all staff and students by Sodexho, the District's food service. Thanks to Dave Harvey and Sodexho!

1:30 pm All Hall of Fame inductees and their families and "groupies" need to be in the gym BEFORE THE STUDENTS ARE RELEASED FROM CLASS! Inductees should report to the main office to get escorted to the gym. Students are released at 1:40 and there will be a stampede to the gym!

1:50 pm - 2:20 pm Homecoming Pep Assembly in gym introducing Homecoming Court and Hall of Fame inductees.

2:45 pm - 3:45 pm Hall of Fame induction in Media Center (Library-located on main floor to the right in the center hall) - Michael T. Smith as Emcee.  A special invitation to all previous Hall of Fame inductees to attend this program!

3:45 pm - 4:30 pm North Salem Viking Alumni and Friends annual meeting in Media Center (Library) - Homer Wood presiding

5:00 pm - 5:45 pm Homecoming Parade. Hall of Famers and Viking Association Board members to ride floats and cars in parade. Any alums with vehicles who want to be in the parade and all others should assemble at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 3295 Ladd Ave. NE, off Savage St., between Market and D by 4:45. The parade route will be south on Savage to D, then follow D back to the school.

5:45 pm - 6:30 pm light supper for Hall of Famers and any Alumni and Friends Association members in the Media Center. Food provided by the North High Culinary Arts students.

7:00 pm Homecoming football game vs. Hood River Valley HS (non-league game). We are trying to get the skybox in the press box for Hall of Famers and families. At any rate, there will be reserved seating on the 50 yard line. Hall of Famers will be introduced at halftime. (Any Hall of Famers needing transport from the Media Center to the stadium will be able to ride electric cart to the football field.)

To reserve a place for the free light supper and any questions, contact Steve Chambers:

Historical Note:  During the Great Depression, the North High building was constructed as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, partly as a means of putting Americans to work.  It opened in the fall of 1937 as Salem High School, replacing the old building on Marion Street on the lot which became Meier and Frank department store and is currently a Macys.  The first use of the building was actually in the spring of 1937 when the auditorium was the site of the graduation for the class of 1937.

A special thanks to alumnus Mark Adams of Supervinyl Signs for designing and producing the special banners gracing the facade of North High in honor of the building's 75th birthday.  More class to a classy building!

Football supporters are selling VIP parking passes for all home football games.  Parking will be in the Olinger parking lot and will feature tailgating.  100% of the proceeds will go to North High football.  For more details, contact Emily Feskens at 503-999-9109.

Mary Lou Zeek, artist, gallery owner, arts activist

  Audrey Luna, opera colotura soprano

  J. Warren Carkin, architect

  Bruce Michels, industrial chemist, philanthopist

Jed Lowrie, major league baseball player

1997 Girls' State Championship track team

  Hollis Huntington, coach

  Stuart Leek, teacher, administrator

The induction program will be held in the North High Media Center on Friday, September 21, at 2:45 pm.  All are welcome!

Class of 1953 Scholarships

In 2001 the Salem High School class of 1953 started an annual scholarship program.  Over the years, this very generous class has contributed $26,606.00 to graduating seniors from North High.  Recipients must attend an accredited school of higher education in Oregon.  Thank-you to this incredible class!

Send us your reunion photos!  Our website will post pictures of reunions as we receive them.  Smile for the cameras!  Please send digital pics to Steve Chambers at the e-mail address below.

Fund for the School

At its July meeting, the Viking Association Board voted to award up to $5000 annually for projects submitted by staff at North High which will help in the education of North students.  This will be in addition to our two $1000 scholarships for graduation seniors.

If you have not already done so, please send to Steve Chambers your full contact information (name, maiden name where applicable, street address, phone number, and graduating class or if your are a friend) as this will help us keep in contact should your e-mail address change.

Please pass this newsletter to other Vikings so they can also stay in touch with the school.
