North High News

Fall Sports Roundup

ThKaelia Neale boys' cross country team narrowly missed qualifying as one  of  the two teams to represent the Central  Valley Conference at the State meet.  Runners Esau Lopez and Enrique Fernandez made 2nd team All-Conference.  For the girls, junior Kaelia Neal (left)once again qualified for the State meet, finishing second among CVC runners.

The boys' soccer team made it to the second round of the playoffs before being knocked out.  Edgar Barajas (right) was selected 1st team All-Conference, while Jose Lemus made 2nd team and Daniel   Ortiz and Jorge Carmona were chosen honorable mention.   Leticia Alvarez and Lorena Naranjo were selected honorable mention from the girls' team.

Kelsey Rank and Tori O'Connor, from the much-improved volleyball team, won 2nd team All-Conference honors.

Despite a disappointing football season, junior defensive end Kyle Bobbitt was selected for the All-CVC 2nd team.  Honorable mention went to Tyler Jones, Adam McClelland, Chris Feskens, Justin Lowe, Robert Pyatt, Jerrin Williams, Santano Sauseda, John Van, Joe Houdeshell, Devin Varay, and Kolton Waldron.

Senior All-Night Party

Once again parents are planning to put on a party free of drugs and alcohol all night the night of graduation in June.   The idea is to have a safe and fun place for North students to celebrate.  One of the most effective lures to get kids to this party is the many raffle items and giveaways.  But the parents need help in acquiring good things to be given back to the young people.  If you are willing to make a tax-deductible in-kind donation of items, please contact Jennifer Rank at kjrank1@comcast.net .  Consider this option as the tax year for deductions is coming to a close.

Future Business Leaders of America

FBLA's teacher at North, Jon Abel, is still eager to find past members of FBLA who would be able to come into his class and share their experience of FBLA and/or businesses they have gone on to work for.  Others who have business experience are welcome.  If this is something that interests you, please contact Jon at abel_jon_r@salkeiz.k12.or.us .

Alumnae in the News

Every year the Salem Keizer Education Foundation puts on the Crystal Apple Awards honoring education and educators.  The Historic Elsinore Theater is filled nearly to capacity with family, friends, collegues, and community leaders and all nominees are given literal red carpet treatment.  Over the years, North High has garnered a disproportionate share of the Crystal Apples.  This year it was the turn of a 2012 alumna, Joleen Braasch (pictured below in the center, 2nd row, with the educator recipients) to win a special award, a scholarship presented by Western Oregon University for the most promising future teacher.  You may recall that Braasch was the first recipient of the Viking Association's prestigious Mark Hatfield Scholarship last spring.

Another honored alumna, opera singer Audrey Luna (shown below), who was inducted into the North High Hall of Fame this fall, recently was one of the leads in the Metropolitan Opera's The Tempest, by Thomas Adès. One critic wrote, Ariel (her role) "is a dazzling creation and Audrey Luna conquers the role."  The performance was shown in HD in theaters around the world, including Salem.

A Special Thanks

A special thanks to Julie Hittner Young (also a Viking alumna) and Sam Skillern (a Viking parent), both members of the Viking Association, for the use of the conference room of the Salem Leadership Foundation for our November Board meeting.  The SLF is an organization that works for supporting kids, families, and neighborhoods.  Their webpage is at info@salemlf.org
