North High News

"School's out for summer!" chants the Alice Cooper song. The common conception is that when summer vacation arrives, the students leave, the teachers leave, and, for all intents and purposes, the schools are shut down until a couple of weeks before classes start in September.

Not so at North High. We thought we would check up on what goes on at our beloved high school when vacation starts. Were we surprised! Currently 27 classrooms, the library and the commons/cafeteria are all in use. Four office staff and seven maintenance/custodial employees are working full time during the summer. Administrators get one month off, but there has been at least one administrator in the building every day. They are doing interviews to fill staff positions, developing the master schedule for the fall, planning staff development, and interacting with parents and the community.

Classes are in session! There are five different summer school sessions taking place during this break:

  • The Salem-Keizer District Migrant Program is conducting classes for around 60 students.
  • The 8th Grade Transition Program has over 100 students honing their skills for high school and learning what it will be like at the higher grades.
  • There are two credit recovery programs for students who have fallen behind on the road to graduation (around 60 students).
  • Through a grant from the Oregon Pacific Area Health Education Center over 35 students are working to obtain credit in math, science, and English. Every student who successfully completes the program will receive a $1000 college scholarship!

Due to the 2008 capital construction bond, three area elementary schools are closed for building upgrades. Offices and their staffs, as well as much of the equipment, for Grant, Hoover, and Highland elementaries have been moved to North High for the summer. In addition, a new fire alarm system is being installed at North under the bond to replace the previous outdated one.

Also during the summer months, the school cafeteria has been serving hundreds of breakfasts and lunches under a Federal poverty program.

As the summer "vacation" is the only time the custodial and maintenance staff can strip the floors and reapply wax and do a thorough cleanup of the building, there has been a logistical nightmare in getting to all the spaces that need work.

North High is anything but an empty shell during the three months regular classes are not in session. We thought you'd like to know how our 75-year old building is used year-round.

Hall of Fame

The Hall of Fame committee has selected the next class of inductees who will be inducted on Homecoming Day, September 21, 2012.  There will be two inductees for each catagory this year since there were none last year.  Hopefullly our next newsletter will contain short biographies of the new Hall of Famers.  Any nominations that come in now will be considered for the the 2013 class.  Remember to include as much information as you can to help the committee make its choice.

75th Birthday

Plans for the celebration of the school building's 75th anniversary next fall are also moving ahead.  Stay tuned for infomation so you can join in the fun!

Board of Director Elections

Three positions on our 9-member Viking Association Board of Directors will be up for election in the fall.  Terms are for three years and the Board meets every month at the school.  If you are interested or would like to nominate someone, please contact Steve Chambers at the e-mail address below.

Our website has information on reunions that are being planned for this summer and fall.  Check there for your class.  Unfortunately, the school has not yet heard from some classes concerning their intentions to get together.  If you have information not on our list on the website, please pass that on to us so we can help you communicate with your fellow classmates.

Send us your reunion photos!  Our website will post pictures of reunions as we receive them.  Smile for the cameras!

If you have not already done so, please send to Steve Chambers your full contact information (name, maiden name where applicable, street address, phone number, and graduating class or if your are a friend) as this will help us keep in contact should your e-mail address change.

Please pass this newsletter to other Vikings so they can also stay in touch with the school.
