North High News

The big news is that the 2012-2013 school year is about to commence.  The week following Labor Day some 1800 students will begin another year at North Salem High School.  They will be facing changes in Federal and State education policy, ones that will have an impact on their graduation and on readiness for college and the workplace.  More on these changes in future newsletters.

The other big news is the upcoming 75th birthday celebration for our beloved building (you know, the one that LOOKS like a classic school SHOULD).  Built as a WPA project during the Great Depression, the building opened to classes in the fall of 1937.

 North High

In conjunction with Homecoming this fall, there will be a birthday celebration, complete with cake for all students and alumni.  Save the date of September 21, a Friday.  There will be a pep assembly honoring the Homecoming Court and the new inductees into the North High Hall of Fame, followed by the actual induction ceremony for the inductees (see below under Alumni News), the Annual Meeting of the North Salem Viking Alumni and Friends Association, the Homecoming parade, and then the Homecoming football game.  We hope you all will plan to attend.  More on the exact schedule of events will appear in the September e-newsletter.

Fall sports kick off Friday, August 31 with a football game against Newberg at North.  Gametime is 7 pm.  All alums over 65 are eligible for a Golden Age Pass.  Simply go to the North High office and ask for one.  It gives you free admission to all league games for any Salem-Keizer public school for all sports.

Football supporters are selling VIP parking passes for all home football games.  Parking will be in the Olinger parking lot and will feature tailgating.  100% of the proceeds will go to North High football.  For more details, contact Emily Feskens at 503-999-9109.

Hall of Fame                                                                                              The Hall of Fame committee has selected the next class of inductees who will be inducted on Homecoming Day, September 21, 2012.  Due to no induction last year, four additional selections were made as a make up.  This year's inductees into the North Salem High School Hall of Fame are:

Achievement:                                                                                             Mary Lou Zeek, artist, gallery owner, arts activist

Audrey Luna, opera colotura soprano

J. Warren Carkin, architect

Bruce Michels, industrial chemist, philanthopist

Jed Lowrie, major league baseball player

1997 Girls' State Championship track team

Hollis Huntington, coach

Stuart Leek, teacher, administrator

Send us your reunion photos!  Our website will post pictures of reunions as we receive them.  Smile for the cameras!  Please send digital pics to Steve Chambers at the e-mail address below.

Fund for the School

At its July meeting, the Viking Association Board voted to award up to $5000 annually for projects submitted by staff at North High which will help in the education of North students.  This will be in addition to our two $1000 scholarships for graduation seniors.

If you have not already done so, please send to Steve Chambers your full contact information (name, maiden name where applicable, street address, phone number, and graduating class or if your are a friend) as this will help us keep in contact should your e-mail address change.

Please pass this newsletter to other Vikings so they can also stay in touch with the school.
