Mary Eyre (2006 Distinguished Lifetime Award)

A teacher at Salem High/North Salem High for 40 years. “Miss Eyre” was much loved by her students. She founded the state Model United Nations, was named Salem Distinguished Citizen by the Salem Chamber of Commerce, and received numerous other awards and honors, including having a Salem-Keizer elementary school named for her. Mary Eyre led the drive for the city to purchase the Deepwood House, served on the Community Conservation Committee, the Terry Oaks Urban Renewal Project, the Mission Mill Museum Board, the Salem YWCA board, the Friends of the Library, and the United Nations Association. She passed away in 1999 at the age of 102.
