Carl Shinkle began his thirty-year teaching career at North Salem in 1968, but since his retirement he has remained a fixture at North Salem sporting events. He continues to score and time the home football games, running the scoreboard, but he is probably best known as the longtime Voice of the Vikings, announcing both basketball and baseball games, which he has been doing for four decades and counting. There is little question that during that period Carl has been the number one fan and chronicler of North Salem Athletics.
As an English teacher, Carl was a model of intellectual depth for his students and his colleagues as well. Legions of his former students responded enthusiastically as news of his selection hit the social media. He touched countless lives of students who came under his influence in such classes as A.P. Senior English, and Film as Literature, a class he pioneered in the District. One of his former students is fellow honoree Pat Fitzsimons.
Carl was nominated by his colleagues and friends Joanne Evans, Chris Lee, and Ken Slack.
